Deputy health minister aids accident victim on Nhat Tan bridge

A 44-year-old man involved in a serious traffic accident was assisted by deputy health minister Tran Van Thuan, who cleared the way for him to reach the nearest hospital during the critical "golden hour".

The accident occurred on 18/9 as the 44-year-old man was returning home from work. The victim suffered multiple injuries and fell into a deep coma. Deputy Health Minister Tran Van Thuan, who happened to be passing by the scene, asked his driver to clear the way and rush the victim to E Hospital, the nearest medical facility, for immediate treatment. While en route, he called the hospital to request that they prepare staff and equipment to maximize the "golden hour" for emergency care.

A representative from E Hospital said that when the patient arrived at the emergency room, Mr. Thuan personally directed the medical staff to conduct a thorough examination. The diagnosis revealed that the patient was in a state of multiple traumatic shock with a traumatic brain injury, multiple rib fractures, hemothorax, and pneumothorax.

"This was an extremely critical situation where every minute could have cost the patient's life without proper and timely first aid and intensive care," said Dr. Nguyen Dinh Thuyen from the intensive care unit at E Hospital.

The hospital activated its emergency response system, mobilizing all relevant departments. Doctors performed pleurodesis surgery and emergency surgery to remove a brain hematoma, relieve pressure, control the injuries, and administer resuscitation measures. After the surgery, the patient continued to receive treatment and close monitoring. The medical team assessed the case as very severe, requiring long-term treatment and rehabilitation.

"The patient is now out of danger, conscious, able to move his limbs, and responsive to the doctor's questions," Dr. Thuyen reported, adding that he hopes the patient's condition will continue to improve.

Doctors believe that if the patient had arrived at a suitably equipped medical facility even 30 minutes later, his survival would have been unlikely. This case reaffirms the critical importance of the "golden hour" in trauma care.

Based on this case, experts recommend that the public should be equipped with basic knowledge of first aid, particularly for traffic accidents. Proper on-site response can not only save lives but also reduce the burden of treatment and later rehabilitation.
