Detection of kidney cancer from lower back pain

Ba Hoang Hien, 77, experienced recurrent lower back and left pelvic pain, leading doctors to discover a tumor diagnosed as cancerous in her left kidney.

Bac si Truong Bao Thang, from the Department of Urology - Andrology at Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi, diagnosed Ba Hoang Hien with early-stage kidney cancer. The tumor in her left kidney measured approximately 4,5 cm, exhibited small calcifications, caused a protruding border, and compressed the renal parenchyma. Several small cysts under 5 mm were also present. Surgery was recommended for radical treatment and to precisely identify the tumor's nature.

The surgical team performed a laparoscopic nephrectomy to remove Ba Hien's left kidney and the tumor. This minimally invasive approach ensured complete removal of the lesion, limited blood loss, reduced post-operative pain, and shortened her recovery period. This method was suitable for Ba Hien, given her history of hypertension and spinal stenosis.

Histopathological examination of the removed tumor confirmed renal cell carcinoma, a type of cancer originating from the epithelial cells of the proximal convoluted tubule. Bac si Thang noted that this form of kidney cancer is prevalent among adults. Most cases are discovered incidentally, as patients often present with no specific symptoms or only vague signs such as hematuria or persistent, unexplained back pain, which can be easily overlooked. In Ba Hien's situation, the tumor was detected early, before it had metastasized beyond the kidney. Doctors anticipate a favorable outcome, provided she maintains regular post-operative follow-up appointments.

Ba Hien is recovering well, with a noticeable reduction in her persistent lower back pain. She will require regular follow-up appointments for doctors to assess the function of her remaining kidney and to detect any recurrence early.

Bac si Thang advises the public, particularly elderly individuals and those with underlying health conditions, not to dismiss persistent, recurrent, or unexplained lower back pain. Such symptoms can be warning signs of various underlying diseases, including early-stage kidney cancer. Timely medical examinations, along with appropriate tests and imaging diagnostics, are crucial for early detection and improved treatment effectiveness.
