Phu Quy Military-Civilian Medical Center successfully conducted its first four laparoscopic surgeries on the afternoon of 2/10. This milestone event, supervised by a technical transfer team from Binh Thuan General Hospital, marks a significant advancement for healthcare on Phu Quy island.
Among the four patients was Ho Thi Tien, who underwent surgery for appendicitis. "If I had to go to the mainland for surgery, I would incur significant travel costs and time", Tien stated, highlighting the direct benefit for island residents.

Doctor Duong Tin Phuc, director of the Phu Quy Military-Civilian Medical Center, emphasized that laparoscopic surgery allows for the treatment of various surgical conditions directly on the island, reducing patient transfers to the mainland. This minimally invasive technique facilitates faster recovery and results in more aesthetically pleasing scars for patients. Conditions treatable with local laparoscopic surgery include appendicitis, ovarian cysts, and perforated stomachs.
The implementation of this advanced procedure was made possible by a new laparoscopic surgery system, valued at 3 billion VND, sponsored by the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group. To ensure proficient operation, the center dispatched two doctors, three nurses, and one anesthesiologist for specialized training at Binh Thuan General Hospital and Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital.
The Phu Quy Military-Civilian Medical Center, a Class III hospital with 70 beds, manages an average of 150 outpatient visits daily. Historically, most surgical and obstetric procedures on the island were emergencies, primarily performed as open surgeries. Annually, the center conducts 200-250 surgeries, including approximately 100 appendectomies and 100 cesarean sections, underscoring the demand for enhanced surgical capabilities.
Phu Quy island is situated over 110 km from the mainland and is only accessible by sea. Passenger boat travel from the island to Phan Thiet port typically ranges from 2-3.5 hours, depending on the vessel type and weather conditions, making local advanced medical care crucial.
