Foot fungus leads to severe infection

After wading through floodwaters, 30-year-old Anh developed a fungal infection that caused painful sores, peeling skin, and severe secondary infection.

Initially, Anh experienced redness and itching on her feet. Assuming it was a minor irritation from dirty water, she purchased over-the-counter creams. However, the condition worsened, spreading to her hands and neck within days.

Dr. Vo Thi Tuong Duy, a dermatologist at the Dermatology and Cosmetic Dermatology unit of Tam Anh General Clinic in District 7, examined Anh's feet and found numerous red patches oozing fluid. A fungal test confirmed a skin fungal infection.

Dr. Duy explained that floodwater creates an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive. Prolonged exposure to water compromises the skin's protective barrier, making it susceptible to fungal infections. In Anh's case, the delay in seeking professional treatment and the use of incorrect topical medications allowed the infection to spread beyond her feet to her hands and neck, resulting in a more widespread and severe infection.

Dr. Duy prescribed antifungal medication, both topical and oral. After two weeks of treatment, Anh's skin inflammation subsided, and the red patches stopped spreading.

Dr. Duy noted that the early signs of a fungal skin infection often resemble allergies, leading individuals to self-treat, which can worsen the condition and cause secondary infections or widespread inflammation. Untreated foot fungus can become chronic, causing cracks, bleeding, bacterial infections, and impacting mobility and daily activities. It's crucial to seek medical attention for skin issues like itching, redness, peeling, or blisters.

After walking in the rain or wading through floodwaters, thorough skin cleansing is essential to prevent fungal and other skin infections. Wash your hands and feet with soap, paying close attention to areas between the toes. Dry thoroughly and change out of wet clothes and shoes promptly to avoid dampness. Any open wounds should be disinfected and covered. Avoid sharing towels, shoes, or personal items to prevent the spread of fungal infections.
