5 foods and drinks that can increase your risk of kidney stones

Consuming excessive amounts of beer, soft drinks, beetroot, and organ meats can elevate the risk of mineral deposits forming in the kidneys, leading to kidney stones.

Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts that form within the kidneys. This condition is not only painful but also has a high recurrence rate after treatment. Poor diet is a major contributor to kidney stone formation. Certain foods should be limited, especially for those who have previously experienced calcium oxalate or uric acid stones.

High-oxalate foods, including spinach, beetroot, nuts, and chocolate, contain oxalate, which can bind with calcium in the kidneys to form hard stones, especially calcium oxalate stones—the most common type. Choosing low-oxalate fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumber, bananas, cauliflower, and grapes can help reduce oxalate intake.

Foods high in sodium (salt) are detrimental to both healthy individuals and those with a history of kidney stones. Excess salt increases calcium excretion in urine, a key factor in calcium stone formation.

Processed foods, canned soups, and fast food should be limited. Prioritize fresh foods and home cooking, which allows for control over salt intake. Use herbs, lemon juice, or mild spices for flavor.

High-purine foods like sardines, anchovies, organ meats, and beer are rich in purines. Uric acid is a waste product created during purine breakdown. Excessive uric acid can lead to the formation of small stones that cause severe pain during urination and blood in the urine.

Animal protein such as red meat, organ meats, and shellfish has a two-fold effect. It increases uric acid production and reduces citrate, which helps prevent kidney stones. Animal protein also acidifies urine, increasing the risk of stone formation. Dried peas, lentils, peanuts, and tofu can be alternative protein sources.

Soft drinks and bottled juices, loaded with added sugars, increase calcium excretion, while the phosphoric acid in carbonated drinks promotes stone formation. Excessive sugar intake leads to various health issues, including high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and obesity, all of which increase the risk of kidney stones. Besides water, sugar-free soda or water with fresh lemon juice are healthier alternatives.
