HMOs (Human Milk Oligosaccharides) are complex carbohydrates found in breast milk. This important compound is being added to advanced nutritional formulas due to its benefits for children's immune systems and overall health. However, there are few long-term clinical studies evaluating the benefits of HMOs.

Recently, the results of a large-scale, long-term clinical study announced by Abbott at the 57th European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) conference showed that a formula supplemented with five HMOs (2′-FL, 3-FL, LNT, 3′-SL, and 6′-SL) at a high dose of 2.5g/L led to several health improvements in children.
The study noted significant improvements in children's developing immune systems. The first few years of life are a crucial period for immune system development.
Children's digestive health was also enhanced. According to Abbott's research, at six months, children who consumed the formula had higher levels of beneficial gut bacteria compared to those who used a nutritional solution without HMOs. This contributes to a healthier gut microbiome in the long term.
Children showed better tolerance. Those who used the high-dose 5HMO formula exhibited good tolerance and softer stools compared to those who used a formula without HMOs. Additionally, the children experienced healthy growth, with height, weight, and head circumference developing similarly to the control group.
Cognitive and language development in children was also improved, with higher scores in language and social development compared to the group using a nutritional solution without HMOs.
This large-scale, long-term clinical study by Abbott regularly recorded the growth and health indicators of 607 children over two years. Scientists will continue to study and publish results evaluating the longer-term impacts of this research.
