Is astigmatism hereditary?

I have had astigmatism since childhood. My 6-year-old child often squints when watching TV or reading. Is astigmatism hereditary, and how is it treated? (Hoa Viet, TP HCM)

Answer:

One of the main causes of astigmatism is heredity. If parents have astigmatism, their children have a higher risk of developing this refractive error from a young age. However, not all cases of astigmatism are hereditary. Some children can still develop normal vision even if their parents have astigmatism, and conversely, children can develop astigmatism due to other causes such as corneal irregularities, unhealthy lifestyle habits, or environmental factors.

Astigmatism in young children is often difficult to detect because they are not yet able to clearly describe blurred or tired vision. Some warning signs include children frequently squinting, tilting their heads when reading, complaining of tired eyes, watery eyes, frequent eye rubbing, or poor concentration while studying.

Astigmatism is a common refractive error that occurs when the cornea or lens has an irregular shape, causing blurred or distorted vision. Depending on the severity, doctors may prescribe corrective lenses combined with regular monitoring. Parents should also limit young children’s use of electronic devices, ensure adequate lighting for study, and encourage outdoor activities to support better vision development.

You should take your child to a medical facility with an ophthalmology department for a refraction test, fundus examination, and comprehensive evaluation. Early detection and management can prevent the risk of amblyopia, an irreversible condition of poor vision, in your child.
