The body's endocrine system plays many roles, including regulating metabolism, mood, and reproduction. Changes in this system can affect the entire body, causing noticeable symptoms. If you experience any of the following signs, you should consult a doctor for a hormone check-up, diagnosis, and timely treatment.
Persistent fatigue. Occasional tiredness is normal, especially after a busy day or a poor night's sleep. But if you constantly feel low on energy and fatigue doesn't improve despite rest and a proper diet, you should see a doctor. This could be a sign of a hormonal imbalance.
For example, hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) slows down metabolism, leading to exhaustion, weight gain, and lethargy. Addison's disease, a condition where the adrenal glands don't produce enough cortisol, also causes chronic fatigue and abdominal pain. Doctors assess the thyroid through blood tests that measure hormone levels, such as TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone).
Sudden weight changes. Unexplained sudden weight gain or loss could be a consequence of conditions like thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, or adrenal imbalances. These conditions affect fat storage, energy expenditure, and appetite regulation. Hypothyroidism slows metabolism, leading to weight gain, while hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) can cause unintended weight loss.
Frequent mood swings. Thyroid disorders, menopause, or adrenal dysfunction causing hormonal imbalances can increase stress and anxiety levels. People with these conditions often experience mood swings, anxiety, anger, and sudden irritability.
Irregular menstrual cycles. Irregular periods, heavy bleeding, or missed periods could be symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal issues. These conditions alter hormone levels in the body, which over time can negatively impact fertility.
Dark, thickened patches of skin. If you notice darkened, thickened skin on your neck, armpits, or groin, consider seeing an endocrinologist. This skin change, known as acanthosis nigricans, is an early sign of insulin resistance or hormonal imbalance.
