Nurse bites off acrylic nails to save passenger having a seizure

A nurse sprinted across a train station, biting off her acrylic nails to aid a passenger experiencing a seizure.

Li Mengyi, a nurse at a hospital in Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, was on vacation on 12/8. She and her two children, ages 15 and 12, were at Nanjing South Railway Station to board the last train of the day to Suzhou. Hearing an announcement requesting medical assistance for a passenger, Li immediately left her bags with her children, promising to return quickly, and rushed to the passenger who had collapsed.

With less than 30 minutes until departure, Li, who was at Gate A21, had to cross the entire station to reach Gate A4. Upon arrival, she saw a man convulsing and biting his tongue, causing bleeding. Based on her years of clinical experience, Li determined the man was having a seizure.

She removed her rings and bit off her acrylic nails to clear any obstructions from the man's mouth with her bare hands to prevent choking, then took his blood pressure. About 5 minutes later, the man regained consciousness.

After the passenger stabilized, Li instructed station staff on further steps and ran back to the ticket gate. With less than two minutes until the train's final boarding call, her children, thanks to the help of station staff, had safely reached the gate and were waiting for her.

"My son looked at me with a worried expression, saying he was a little scared. But because of my professional responsibility, I knew I had to help," Li said.

She added that biting off her acrylic nails was painful, but necessary to provide proper first aid.

Li's children, upon learning of their mother's actions, said, "Mom, you're amazing. We're so proud of you."

"Hearing my children say that made me feel like everything I did was worthwhile," Li shared.

After the video of Li went viral on Chinese social media, she received widespread praise.

"She's a real-life angel," one commenter wrote. Another added, "She isn't allowed to wear acrylic nails at work and can only do so during vacation. I’m truly touched by her actions."
