Nhien had been suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an enlarged prostate, for years. Recent medication proved ineffective, worsening his condition to the point of needing to urinate 5 to 6 times a night and experiencing urinary retention.
Doctor Nguyen Tan Cuong, deputy head of the Urology, Nephrology, and Andrology Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, observed that Nhien's prostate had grown to a considerable size of approximately 66 ml. The median lobe protruded into the bladder, causing a blockage in urine flow despite a relatively small amount of residual urine.

Due to Nhien's advanced age and underlying conditions, including hypertension and myocardial ischemia, a lengthy surgical procedure was not advisable. Dr. Cuong recommended the Rezum steam therapy, a minimally invasive, painless procedure known for its rapid recovery time and minimal complications. The patient experienced minor blood in his urine and mild discomfort in the urinary tract for a few days following the procedure.
Doctors performed a prostate endoscopy, using a specialized device to deliver steam into the prostate, destroying the excess tissue surrounding the urethra. Over time, the prostate shrinks, widening the prostatic urethra, reducing blockage and improving urine flow.
Within 24 hours after the procedure, Nhien's health significantly improved, his appetite returned to normal, and he was discharged. Doctors provided instructions on proper catheter care to prevent blockages and urinary tract infections during the 10 days before its removal. He was also advised to increase his fiber intake to avoid constipation and to schedule follow-up appointments.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common urological condition affecting men over 50. It can lead to complications like urinary retention, urinary tract infections, bladder stones, blood in the urine, and even kidney failure if urine backflows from the bladder to the kidneys.
Depending on the severity of urinary dysfunction and its impact on the patient's quality of life, doctors may recommend various treatments, including medication, minimally invasive procedures like Rezum, and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). According to Dr. Cuong, Rezum is a suitable intervention for older patients with multiple underlying health conditions.
To prevent BPH, doctors advise men to maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, limit alcohol consumption, exercise regularly, maintain a healthy weight, and undergo regular health checkups. Men over 50 should have their prostate checked at least once and seek immediate medical attention if they experience any urinary problems to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
