Tam Anh hospital receives cancer treatment technology transfer from Russia

Tam Anh General Hospital system signed a cooperation agreement with the National Medical Research Center of Radiology (Russia) to receive core technology transfer and cancer diagnosis and treatment techniques on the afternoon of 12/9.

This event marks the realization of the cooperation agreement signed in May of this year in Russia between VNVC - Tam Anh General Hospital and the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), within the framework of the official visit of General Secretary To Lam, at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two sides will cooperate in key activities: exchanging practical experience in applying technology, methods of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancers; organizing scientific conferences; and cooperating in scientific research in the field of cancer, cancer surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The cooperation specifically focuses on the comprehensive transfer of core technologies, important inventions related to vaccines, drugs, and cancer diagnosis and treatment techniques from Russia to Vietnam.

Russian Health Minister Mikhail Albertovich Murashko said that Russia currently trains health professionals for about 70% of countries worldwide each year. Russia also provides various technologies in cancer treatment, organ transplantation, and technological solutions for health system development. "This event contributes to realizing the agreements reached earlier by the leaders of the two countries, towards the goal of better healthcare for the people," Mr. Murashko said.

On the Vietnamese side, Health Minister Dao Hong Lan assessed that the cooperation will help improve the quality of high-quality medical examination and treatment.

"Cancer treatment with advanced technology, and the production of vaccines and medical biological products are urgent needs of Vietnam, Russia, and the world," Health Minister Dao Hong Lan emphasized.

Immediately after the signing ceremony, leading experts from the National Medical Research Center of Radiology of Russia, Tam Anh General Hospital, and VNVC will have direct working sessions in both Russia and Vietnam to receive technology and equipment transfer, professional training, and prepare necessary conditions. In the long term, the Ministry of Health and Tam Anh General Hospital system will research and develop a specific implementation plan.

Mr. Ngo Chi Dung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tam Anh General Hospital System and Tam Anh Research Institute (TAMRI), assessed that the cooperation gives Vietnam the opportunity to quickly access new drugs and treatment methods, and achieve self-sufficiency in production. This progress contributes to proactive supply, reduces treatment costs, and improves treatment quality and quality of life for patients.

Cancer remains a burden globally and in Vietnam. According to Globocan 2022 statistics, each year, Vietnam has over 180,400 new cases and 120,100 deaths due to cancer, most of which are detected in late stages, making treatment difficult, while specific drugs often come at a high cost.

Also at the event, the VNVC vaccine and biological product factory signed an agreement with Medsintez Pharmaceutical Company - Russia on technology transfer, training, and production of new generation vaccines and biopharmaceuticals.

The National Medical Research Center of Radiology of Russia is the first cancer research institute in Russia and Europe with a history of over one hundred years. The center is a leader in research, invention, and application of the latest technologies in the field of cancer treatment such as surgery, minimally invasive interventions, proton therapy, radioembolization for tumor treatment, combined chemo-radiation therapy, and vaccines.

To receive the advanced technology transfer from Russia, Tam Anh General Hospital must prepare and meet requirements for human resources and facilities. The system of laboratories, testing, and surgical pathology meets international standards. Notably, the Department of Pathology - Cytology at Tam Anh General Hospital has achieved both CAP (College of American Pathologists) and ISO 15189 certifications. Tam Anh also uses modern equipment such as the CT Somatom Force VB30 to support cancer screening; the Davinci XI Robot to perform over 120 types of complex surgeries; and the Modus V Synaptive Robot applying AI in brain tumor and neurological and spinal surgeries.
