Ovarian teratomas are germ cell tumors, mostly benign, commonly affecting women of reproductive age and occasionally younger individuals. These growths can contain various tissues, including hair, skin, and teeth. If a teratoma grows large or ruptures, it can cause serious complications such as torsion, bleeding, infection, or peritonitis.
Teratomas often develop asymptomatically, making early detection challenging. Doctors recommend women undergo gynecological checkups every 6 months. Screening is also recommended for girls starting puberty.
