The wealthy often pioneer luxurious, and sometimes unusual, beauty trends. The Kardashian family, known for their dedication to youth and beauty, is a prime example. When reality TV star Kim Kardashian admitted to "injecting salmon sperm into her face," she ignited global interest in the treatment scientifically known as PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide).
Salmon sperm DNA extract (PDRN) is recognized for its tissue regeneration properties at the cellular level. Experts say it can penetrate deep into the skin, repairing damage, boosting collagen production, and improving elasticity, firmness, and radiance.

However, there's a significant difference between how this treatment is administered in the US and Asia. Aesthetician Joie Tavernise explains, "Salmon sperm DNA is not FDA (Food and Drug Administration)-approved for injection." Consequently, at US spas like JTAV Clinical Skincare, PDRN is applied topically using non-invasive methods, primarily ultrasound, rather than injected. "This approach offers the benefits of salmon sperm DNA without the downtime or discomfort of injections," Tavernise said.
The treatment is typically offered as a comprehensive 5-in-1 package, ranging from 450 to 650 USD per session. A full session includes: exfoliation to resurface and smooth the skin; oxygen therapy to enhance blood circulation and brighten the complexion; microcurrent to stimulate and firm facial muscles; radiofrequency to stimulate collagen production and tighten skin; and ultrasonic infusion to deliver PDRN deep into the skin for optimal results.
Two ELLE magazine reporters with different skin types tested the treatment. Tiana Randall, who has sensitive skin and some acne, was initially concerned about irritation but was pleasantly surprised by the results. "After just 1-2 days, my fine lines and laugh lines were visibly reduced. My skin felt more elastic, plump, and had a subtle, glassy glow," she shared. However, Randall noted that the treatment didn't significantly improve acne scars or dark spots. "It's worth the cost, but I think it's most effective for mature skin or skin showing signs of aging," she said.
Lizzie Scheader was impressed with the immediate results. "My skin was so radiant that a stranger stopped me on the street to ask what products I used," Scheader recounted. She believes it's a worthwhile investment for those seeking a quick, non-invasive way to achieve flawless skin for a special event like a wedding.
