Tips to reduce hemorrhoids without medication

Choosing comfortable sitting positions for work and during bowel movements, using ice packs, and taking sitz baths can help reduce swelling and pain, alleviating pressure on hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids often affect individuals experiencing chronic constipation, poor diets, sedentary lifestyles, prolonged sitting, and obesity. Though not dangerous, the condition diminishes quality of life, leading to fatigue, reduced confidence, and pain. Pain severity escalates with the stage of hemorrhoids.

Primary treatments involve oral medications, topical creams, or surgical removal. For early-stage hemorrhoids, lifestyle adjustments can reduce symptoms and improve patient comfort.

Comfortable sitting

Consider using a soft pillow or a donut-shaped cushion for comfort while working, whether at home or in the office. Hard surfaces can strain gluteal muscles and the area around hemorrhoids, leading to increased swelling and protrusion of veins. During work, stand and move every 40-60 minutes instead of sitting for two to three consecutive hours. This movement helps alleviate pressure on the buttocks and hemorrhoids.

Adjusting position on the toilet

When on the toilet, try elevating your feet on a stool, raising your knees above your hips. This adjusts the rectal angle, facilitating easier bowel movements and reducing straining that can cause hemorrhoids to protrude. If constipated, avoid prolonged toilet sitting. A wide toilet opening can increase pressure on the anorectal area, worsening hemorrhoids.

Prolonged sitting on the toilet can exacerbate hemorrhoids due to blood pooling and vein swelling in the area. Therefore, it is advisable to complete bowel movements quickly, avoiding distractions from phones or other devices.

Sitz baths

Sitz baths effectively reduce pain, itching, and inflammation associated with hemorrhoids. Patients can use a small basin, filling it with warm water and soaking for about 15-20 minutes. After soaking, gently pat the anal area dry with a soft cloth. Warm water helps calm the body's inflammatory response, reducing swelling and discomfort.

Use ice packs

Hemorrhoids involve swollen veins protruding from the skin. Applying ice packs to the anal area can reduce swelling and help manage symptoms. Place a clean cloth between the ice pack and your skin, applying it for no more than 15 minutes. If numbness or extreme cold occurs, pause for a few seconds before resuming to prevent frostbite.

Eat more fiber

A high-fiber diet helps prevent hemorrhoid development by reducing constipation. Prune juice, rich in fiber and sorbitol (a natural laxative), can soften stools. Incorporate other fiber-rich foods such as: broccoli, sweet potatoes, dragon fruit, berries, legumes, and chia seeds into your diet.

Patients should avoid coffee, alcohol, and caffeinated beverages, which can dehydrate stools and increase urination. Drink ample water to maintain hydration. Regular exercise facilitates easier stool movement and relaxes inflamed tissues. Avoid using creams or moisturizers, as these can cause stinging and irritation.
