Two times when drinking lemon water can harm your stomach

Drinking lemon water on an empty stomach or right before bed may irritate the stomach and exacerbate digestive problems, particularly for individuals with ulcers or reflux.

General physician Bui Dac Sang, from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Hanoi Traditional Medicine Association, states that lemons are a nutrient-rich fruit. They provide approximately 20-50 mg of vitamin C, which boosts immunity and protects cells from oxidation. Citric acid, making up about 5-6% of lemon juice, helps prevent kidney stones and enhances mineral absorption. Additionally, potassium, flavonoids, and polyphenols in lemons contribute to blood pressure regulation and anti-inflammatory effects.

However, consuming lemon water at the wrong time or in the wrong way can be counterproductive, irritating the stomach lining and negatively affecting the digestive system.

Avoid drinking on an empty stomach

Many people habitually start their day with a glass of lemon water, believing it "cleanses the body." However, this practice is not suitable for everyone.

Lemons contain high levels of citric acid. When this acid enters an empty stomach, it can irritate the stomach lining, stimulating the production of more gastric acid than usual. This may lead to discomfort, such as a gnawing or burning sensation in the upper abdomen. Individuals with stomach ulcers or gastroesophageal reflux disease should exercise caution and avoid excessive consumption of lemon water before eating.

For safety, consider having a light snack beforehand or drinking lemon water after breakfast to minimize the acid's impact on your digestive system.

Avoid drinking close to bedtime

Consuming lemon water at night increases kidney activity, leading to more frequent urination and disrupting sleep. Lying down immediately after drinking lemon water allows stomach acid to easily reflux into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the throat and potentially long-term damage to the digestive tract.

Experts also advise against drinking lemon water continuously for extended periods or consuming excessive amounts daily. Avoid drinking concentrated lemon juice or high doses for weight loss.

The appropriate time to drink lemon water is approximately 30-60 minutes after a meal. Always dilute it with plain or warm water, as consuming pure lemon juice can easily irritate the stomach lining and damage tooth enamel.

After drinking, rinse your mouth with clean water to limit acid residue on your teeth, helping to protect tooth enamel.
