The catering service was fined 35 million VND and suspended for two months, according to a 4/9 decision by the Gia Lai Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Sub-Department. On 28/8, the caterer prepared over 200 meals for a housewarming party in Ia Hiao commune. Afterwards, 131 attendees were hospitalized with symptoms including stomach pain, vomiting, and fever, which doctors diagnosed as food poisoning.
Authorities were unable to test the food for the cause of the poisoning because the caterer failed to retain samples as required, and all the food had been consumed. An unannounced inspection revealed the business lacked the necessary food safety certification. Neither the owner nor the food preparers had received food safety training.
Authorities ordered the catering service to cover the patients’ medical expenses. All those affected have since recovered and been discharged.
