After escaping prison in 1987 while serving a sentence for robbery, Son Hiep assumed a new identity, moved around southern Vietnam, and worked as a laborer.

Records show that Hiep, originally from Au Tho Hamlet, Lac Hoa Commune, Vinh Chau District, Hau Giang Province (now Vinh Chau Ward, Can Tho City), had a wife and two children. In 1986, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbery.

On 4/5/1987, Hiep escaped from Kenh 5 Re-education Camp (now Kenh 5 Prison in Hoa Luu Commune, Can Tho City). He then adopted various aliases and moved to Ca Mau and Bac Lieu to find work. In 1996, after his wife's passing, he settled in Nhu Gia Commune with a new partner, where he continued to work as a laborer.

On September 8th, following an extensive investigation, Can Tho City's criminal police, in collaboration with Kenh 5 Prison and Nhu Gia Commune Police, apprehended Hiep.

He has been transferred back to Kenh 5 Prison for further investigation and processing.
