Minister of Public Security, General Luong Tam Quang, signed the decision to promote Major Canh, an officer with the Xuan Loc commune police, on 9/9.
Yesterday, a task force, including Major Canh and several other Xuan Loc commune police officers, were pursuing Nguyen Van Ty, 30, a suspect in the assault of his 36-year-old sister-in-law.
At 10:30 a.m., the task force spotted Ty fleeing his home towards a acacia forest in hamlet 4. They gave chase but lost sight of him, and split up to search. About 30 minutes later, they found Major Canh dead with multiple injuries.
Xuan Loc commune police mobilized all their forces and coordinated with Dak Lak provincial police to apprehend Ty.
After escaping the police cordon, Ty returned home and barricaded himself inside. Police surrounded the house and stormed in, apprehending Ty. Preliminary findings indicate he ambushed and stabbed Major Canh.

From conscript to deputy head of crime prevention
According to the Dak Lak Provincial Police Department of Organization and Personnel, Major Canh was born in the coastal area of Song Cau (former Phu Yen province). In 3/2008, he enlisted in the People's Public Security, training at the Phu Yen Provincial Police Training Center and Mobile Police Department. Three years later, due to his outstanding achievements, he became a professional police officer.
Canh continued his studies, graduating from the People's Police University. Upon graduation, he returned to work at the former Song Cau town police, serving in the General Investigation Unit. Colleagues described him as a dedicated officer who earned the trust of his superiors and the affection of many.
In 2020, when the Ministry of Public Security implemented the project to deploy regular police officers to the grassroots level, Major Canh volunteered to serve at Xuan Loc commune police. Following administrative restructuring, Xuan Loc and Xuan Hai communes merged, and he was appointed deputy head of crime prevention for the combined Xuan Loc commune police.
Early this morning, Major Canh's small home in Xuan Loc commune was filled with grieving relatives and neighbors. Many were in tears over his sacrifice. He leaves behind an elderly mother, his pregnant 26-year-old wife, and a 4-year-old son.
Nguyen Thi Thu Tham, Major Canh's wife, said her husband was a responsible man, devoted to his mother and loving towards his family. Yesterday morning, he took their son to school for the new term.
"He promised to take me shopping for baby clothes next week to prepare for our upcoming child, and said he would finish work early that morning to pick up our son from school in the afternoon. Then, at noon, we received the terrible news," Tham said.
