The family resided on a farm in the foothills of Lauriano, about 30 km from Turin. Authorities visited the area to survey for a potential landslide evacuation site and discovered the two children still wearing diapers, unable to read, write, or speak fluently.
The children were not registered with any local administrative systems or schools. Their parents, both Dutch citizens, are a 54-year-old metal sculptor father and a homemaker mother.

The parents claimed their children were homeschooled and had sufficient food, toys, and books. However, police reported the children's living environment was completely isolated, lacking any outside interaction and hindering their basic language and social development.
According to local media, the father had lived in Italy for about three years, but few in the area knew of the children's existence. The parents were reportedly obsessed with Covid-19 and other biohazards, refusing to allow their children contact with society or receive vaccinations due to fears of laboratory "poisoning" conspiracies.
"I love my children and only wanted to protect them," the father told local media in late June. He also claimed he designed a solar power and water system to ensure the farm was entirely self-sufficient, minimizing contact with the outside world.
The mayor of Lauriano described the family's residence as "nearly inaccessible," located deep in the woods and far from any main roads. He confirmed this was the first time authorities were aware of the children.
The Turin Juvenile Court declared the parents unfit to care for the children and placed them in protective custody.
The children will undergo psychological and health assessments and begin reintegrating into society before being placed with a suitable foster family.
