Not replacing your sponge regularly
Sponges easily become breeding grounds for bacteria if not replaced periodically.
Alessandro Gazzo, a cleaning expert at Emily's Maids (USA), says it's unnecessary to discard sponges every week, as that's wasteful and environmentally unfriendly. He recommends replacing them at least monthly and cleaning them weekly by soaking them in vinegar or microwaving them for one minute (only for non-metallic sponges).

Sticking to a repetitive cleaning list
Following a fixed cleaning checklist can lead to overlooking certain areas.
Gazzo recommends maintaining 3-5 fixed cleaning tasks each time, such as vacuuming, wiping countertops, and mopping floors. Then, rotate in 5-10 less frequent tasks, like cleaning baseboards, windows, and curtains.
"This method ensures every corner receives attention without making cleaning monotonous," he said.
Forgetting to clean the trash can
According to Sara Aparacio, an expert at Homeaglow cleaning services (USA), many people think changing the trash bag is sufficient, but the can itself needs regular cleaning.
Simply wash it with soap and water, then sprinkle baking soda to neutralize odors. "A dirty trash can is a source of unpleasant smells and discomfort in the kitchen," she said.
Mopping the kitchen floor first
The floor should be cleaned last, as dust and debris will inevitably fall during the cleaning process.
"It's wasteful to mop the floor and then have to redo it because of dirt falling from the countertops or shelves," Aparacio noted.
Neglecting the dishwasher
Even though it's a cleaning appliance, the dishwasher also needs regular cleaning, at least monthly.
The most effective method is to use a specialized cleaning solution to remove odors and residue accumulated in the filter, spray arms, and drain.
Misusing cleaning sprays
Aparacio points out two common mistakes: spraying directly onto surfaces and wiping too quickly.
"It's best to spray the solution onto a cloth first, then wipe, to avoid streaks. Also, allow the solution to sit for a few minutes to maximize its effectiveness," she said.
