Texas student unaware of pregnancy gives birth at home, mistaking baby bump for weight gain

Aubrie Morris, 21, from Texas, was unaware she was pregnant despite using birth control, only discovering it when she unexpectedly gave birth at home.

Aubrie Morris and her boyfriend Preston met while attending university in Texas. Morris, who planned to attend law school, had no immediate thoughts of marriage or children after graduation.

Starting in May 2025, Morris noticed a gradual increase in her weight. By January 2026, she had gained approximately 4.5 kg, which she attributed to late-night snacking and reduced physical activity. Beyond the weight gain, Morris experienced no other typical signs of pregnancy. She stated that she was consistently using birth control and continued to have monthly bleeding.

On 20/2, after attending morning classes, Morris began experiencing severe abdominal cramps, initially believing they were related to a digestive issue. By late afternoon, she noticed something unusual between her legs. "I looked down and saw something protruding. I froze. I thought it was a tumor and that I was dying," Morris recounted. After three pushes, she delivered her baby.

"I placed the baby on the floor and rubbed her chest to help her cry. I acted almost purely on instinct," she shared.

Morris immediately called emergency services. She also sent a photo of the newborn to her boyfriend, informing him she had just given birth and urging him to meet them at the hospital.

Doctors later explained that Morris had experienced a cryptic pregnancy, a condition where a woman remains unaware of her pregnancy for most of the gestation period, often only discovering it during labor or delivery. While a lack of menstruation is a common pregnancy sign, some women experience bleeding during pregnancy, which they may mistake for their regular period.

In Morris's case, her placenta was located at the front of her uterus. This anterior position can sometimes make fetal movements less perceptible for some women, though it is not the sole reason for an undetected pregnancy.

Four days after the birth, Morris and her daughter were discharged from the hospital and moved in with Preston. They waited until the baby was 8 days old before informing their parents about the new arrival.

Morris described caring for her daughter as a challenging process due to its suddenness, but she is gradually adapting to her new role. The young mother temporarily paused her studies but plans to return to school in the fall to complete her program and graduate in December.

The unexpected arrival of her daughter completely altered Morris's previous plans. "This experience helped me realize that things not within our plans can sometimes become an important part of life," she reflected.
