Why some people prefer texting over calling

Needing time to think before speaking, being too busy, or having social anxiety are some of the reasons why many people prefer texting.

American psychologist Marielisa Reyes has observed that many people prefer texting and are hesitant to make phone calls. They feel more comfortable texting because it allows for preparation, avoids expressing emotions that might upset others, and provides more time for work without being drawn into long conversations.

Reyes has also researched and identified some common reasons why many people choose to text.

They need time to carefully consider what they want to say.

According to a study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior Reports (Netherlands), people who prefer texting tend to be cautious with their words. They need time to think things through before speaking to avoid mistakes that could negatively impact their relationships.

According to a survey by YouGov, a UK market research company, 48% of people consider themselves people-pleasers. Instead of declining directly or over the phone, they choose to text to respond tactfully without offending the other person.

However, over-reliance on texting also has its drawbacks. For instance, constantly avoiding conversations because you need time to think can hinder your personal growth. In reality, there are situations that require quick responses, which helps improve your social skills.

Calling makes them anxious.

Many people have a fear of answering the phone, talking to strangers, and generally avoid direct communication.

According to a study by American psychologists, people with social anxiety tend to have fewer friends. This is not good for their overall health, especially their mental health. Therefore, they should try to familiarize themselves with or find healthier ways to improve their anxiety.

They are multitasking.

According to the American Psychological Association, people who prefer texting to calling often multitask. This helps them save time.

They are busy with life, from work to family. From cleaning the house to grocery shopping and cooking, there are many reasons why texting is preferred.

They are exhausted and don't have the energy to talk.

Nowadays, it seems everyone is experiencing burnout, especially when overworked. They don't want to spread negative energy to others, so they choose to limit phone calls and direct conversations. Texting allows them to stay in touch without draining their energy.
