6,000 runners register for VnExpress Marathon Grand Tour Nghe An

6,000 athletes register for first-ever marathon in Nghe An, with 5km and 21km distances accounting for over 70% of participants.

The race is scheduled for 27/9, with a route designed to pass through the former wards of Vinh city, Vinh - Cua Lo boulevard, and coastal areas. Attracting 6,000 athletes, it stands as one of the largest running events in the North Central region.

The two distances of 5km and 21km have proven most popular, collectively accounting for over 70% of registrations, with individual rates of 36,9% and 34,5% respectively. This broad appeal suggests the event successfully draws both novice runners and those with established long-distance experience.

Distance Percentage
5km 36,9%
21km 34,5%
10km 22,0%
42km 6,5%

Local runners have shown strong enthusiasm, with 60,4% of registrations coming from Nghe An. Ha Noi ranks second with 18,3%, trailed by Ha Tinh at 6,5%, TP HCM at 5%, and Da Nang at 2,8%.

When including participants from Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa, the North Central region collectively accounts for nearly 68% of athletes. This significant regional turnout highlights the strong local demand for a major running event that reflects the unique identity of these three provinces' running communities.

Beyond national participation, the marathon also attracts athletes from 12 countries and territories, including Japan, Philippines, China, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, the United States, Russia, France, Egypt, Germany, and Chile.

In terms of age demographics, the two groups 35-44 and 25-34 are the most prominent, making up over 61% of participants. Younger runners aged 6-17 comprise 8,7%, while those over 55 represent 3,8%. This diverse age range suggests the event attracts not only middle-aged runners but also encourages family participation.

Complementing the main event, the Kun Marathon, a dedicated race for children aged 6-10, will take place on 26/9 in Truong Vinh ward. This event, part of the VnExpress Marathon, aims to engage younger participants. Parents can register their children to join.

All 4 distances are set to commence at Ho Chi Minh Square in Truong Vinh ward. Participants in the 42km and 21km races will then proceed to Vinh - Cua Lo boulevard. This 10,8 km long boulevard, with its 32 m width and mostly flat terrain, is ideal for long-distance running.

The event's medal features the iconic thatched roof of Sen Village, enclosed within a six-sided frame inspired by Vinh Ancient Citadel. Race shirts transition from moss green to light green, adorned with bamboo leaf patterns. Additionally, participants completing the 42km race will receive a turquoise finisher shirt, while 21km finishers will receive a red one.

VnExpress Marathon Nghe An 2026 marks the inaugural event under the "Grand Tour" model. This innovative race concept prioritizes destination exploration, with courses meticulously designed to guide runners through the region's scenic landscapes and rich heritage, transforming a competitive morning into an immersive local discovery journey.
