Alonso admits Real Madrid's shortcomings

Coach Xabi Alonso acknowledged Real Madrid lacked dynamism in their 1-0 La Liga opening victory against Osasuna on the evening of 19/8.

"This match had both good points and areas for improvement," Alonso said after the match at the Bernabeu on 19/8. "We lacked a bit of dynamism. With only two weeks to prepare for the new season and facing a team that had a longer preparation period, we showed some shortcomings. However, there's still a long way to go. This victory gives us peace of mind and provides stability to continue improving."

In their La Liga opener, Real dominated at home with over 70% possession and 18 shots compared to Osasuna's two, but lacked decisive moments. In the first half, their two most dangerous chances came from long-range shots by center-backs Dean Huijsen and Eder Militao. The home side didn't break the deadlock until the 50th minute, thanks to a penalty won and converted by Kylian Mbappe.

According to Alonso, Osasuna succeeded with their familiar defensive style. On the other hand, he was pleased that Real controlled the game for most of the time and prevented the opponent from counter-attacking.

The Spanish coach was also happy that Mbappe scored his first official goal wearing the number 10 shirt, inherited from club legend Luka Modric after his move to AC Milan. "Mbappe wants to score more goals. I don't know if it's because of the number 10 shirt, but it's noteworthy," he added.

Alonso then praised all four new signings: Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alvaro Carreras, and Franco Mastantuono. Regarding Rodrygo, the forward who didn't start for the sixth consecutive match at Real, the former Leverkusen coach reassured: "I have faith in him. This is just one game. If he's still in this situation in three months, it will be a different story."

Alonso began coaching Real during the Club World Cup in June. They drew 1-1 with Al Hilal, beat Pachuca 3-1, Salzburg 3-0 in the group stage, Juventus 1-0 in the round of 16, Dortmund 3-2 in the quarterfinals, before losing 4-0 to PSG in the semifinals. Due to their participation in the Club World Cup, Real Madrid players didn't have as much rest and preparation time for the new season as other teams. They only returned to training about two weeks ago.
