Antony takes pay cut to join Betis

Antony accepted a 30% pay cut to join Betis for a transfer fee of USD 29 million, ending his three-season spell at Man Utd.

Antony’s transfer fee is significantly lower than the USD 111 million Man Utd paid to bring him from Ajax in the summer of 2022. The agreement with Betis includes a clause stipulating that if Betis sells Antony in the future, they will have to pay Man Utd 50% of the profit.

The biggest obstacle to the deal was Antony’s salary, leading to negotiations between the parties in recent days. At Man Utd, the Brazilian player earned approximately USD 8 million per year, while Betis offered only about USD 5.6 million. Therefore, Antony risked losing USD 4.8 million, with two years remaining on his Old Trafford contract.

Initially, the player's side wanted Man Utd or Betis to compensate for the difference, but both refused. Betis stated their budget wouldn't allow it, while Man Utd was adamant they wouldn't spend more on a player no longer in manager Amorim's plans. With the summer transfer window closing today, Antony agreed to the reduced salary.

Antony rediscovered his form in the latter half of last season at Betis, scoring 9 goals and providing 5 assists in 26 matches, contributing significantly to the club reaching the UEFA Conference League final. He integrated well into the Spanish team’s style of play and is seen by manager Manuel Pellegrini as a direct replacement for Isco, who is sidelined with a long-term injury.

While Man Utd incurs a loss, selling Antony remains the optimal choice. The club reduces its wage bill and avoids potential conflict in the dressing room. Man Utd will also receive a percentage of any future transfer fee for Antony. For example, if Betis sells him for USD 49 million, Man Utd will receive USD 10 million.

Among the players no longer in manager Ruben Amorim's plans, Man Utd has moved four: Antony, forwards Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho. Hojlund moved to Napoli on loan, with a purchase clause activated if the Italian club qualifies for the Champions League next season. Rashford also went to Barca on loan, without a purchase option. Garnacho was sold to Chelsea.

Two players remain: Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia. Sancho is attracting interest from Aston Villa, but his salary is an issue. Malacia is likely to move to Elche in Spain.
