Speaking on ITV following Argentina's 3-2 win over Egypt in the round of 16, Neville offered both criticism and praise for center-back duo Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez. The former England international described Romero and Martinez as "the best but also the worst center-back pairing in the world," noting their ability to perform brilliantly at times, only to follow up with puzzling errors.
"Both concede a goal in each game. Then you see them score, win every aerial challenge, and appear everywhere on the pitch," the former Man Utd defender stated.

After Argentina's comeback win against England in the World Cup 2026 semi-finals on 15/7, La Nacion asked Romero about Neville's remarks. "The only thing I hope is that when I retire, I do not become so foolish. I hope I will not criticize a player or anyone," the 28-year-old responded.
Romero emphasized that Argentina consistently gives its utmost effort when representing the national team, even if results occasionally fall short of expectations. For the center-back, reaching the World Cup final again represents a special achievement and a historic milestone for the Argentina squad. He believes the players fully grasp the significance and responsibility of competing for their national team.
Lisandro Martinez also spoke out regarding the criticism directed at him and Romero. "We are accustomed to people always talking about us. It seems they enjoy doing that, and we respond on the pitch, that is all, always with respect," the defender told Marca.
During World Cup 2026, Romero and Martinez contributed to Argentina keeping two clean sheets in 6 appearances, against Algeria and Austria. Alongside the team, they conceded 6 goals against Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland, and England. Tottenham's Romero and Man Utd's Martinez have both played for many years in the English Premier League, where Neville currently works as a television pundit for several broadcasters.
At Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on 15/7, England initially took the lead through Anthony Gordon's close-range finish in the 52nd minute. However, in a seven-minute spell between the 85th and 90+2nd minutes, captain Lionel Messi first assisted Enzo Fernandez for an equalizer from outside the box, then crossed from the right wing for Lautaro Martinez to head in the winning goal, completing Argentina's 2-1 comeback victory.
