Barca sends Rashford back to Man Utd

Marcus Rashford will return to Man Utd after Barca decided not to activate his 30 million EUR (35 million USD) buy-out clause.

Barca informed Rashford on 10/6 that they would not exercise the buy-out clause before its 15/6 expiration. This decision means the English forward will return to Man Utd, where he remains under contract until summer 2028.

Rashford joined Barca on loan in summer 2025, a move intended to bolster coach Hansi Flick's attack. The 28-year-old forward made a positive impact, recovering from a mid-season dip to perform well in the final months. He contributed to 25 goals in 49 matches across all competitions for Barca.

However, Barca's squad situation changed in recent weeks. A key reason for the decision to forgo Rashford was the Catalan club's acquisition of Anthony Gordon for approximately 70 million EUR (81 million USD).

Gordon plays in the same preferred left-wing position as Rashford. Raphinha also remains coach Flick's primary choice in that area. The arrival of the 25-year-old forward created an excess of left-sided players, significantly reducing the need to retain Rashford.

Flick values Gordon's pressing and defensive support. The German coach considers high pressing a core element of his tactical system. He rates Rashford lower than his compatriot in this aspect.

Age also played a part in the decision. Rashford will turn 29 in October this year, making him about three and a half years older than Gordon. Barca is pursuing a squad rejuvenation plan, making Gordon a better fit for their long-term strategy.

Beyond tactical considerations, financial constraints remain a major hurdle for the Camp Nou club. Although Rashford accepted a nearly 40% reduction in his salary during his time at Barca, his wages still rank among the highest in the squad.

Barca's board is also reluctant to immediately spend 35 million USD to activate the buy-out clause, given other priority targets in the transfer market. Flick's team is currently focused on finding a new striker to prepare for the post-Robert Lewandowski era. Forward Julian Alvarez is a top target for this plan.

Despite this, the possibility of Rashford staying at Barca is not entirely closed. Some sources indicate the Catalan club still values the English international and does not rule out future negotiations with Man Utd.

Barca hopes to reduce the transfer fee or loan Rashford for another season. However, this scenario is unlikely, as Man Utd is attracting interest from several other clubs.

Among the clubs pursuing Rashford, Bayern Munich is a notable suitor. The German club previously missed out on Gordon and has now shifted its focus to Rashford. Bayern is prepared to pay a fee equivalent to or higher than the 35 million USD Barca declined.

Rashford still prefers to continue playing for Barca. However, he is delaying a decision while he focuses on preparing for the World Cup 2026 with the England squad.

After receiving the notification from Barca, Rashford removed all club-related links from his social media bios. This signals his preparation for a departure after one season with the club.
