Bayern sets a series of records in Bundesliga

Bayern Munich achieved a series of impressive milestones in their 6-2 comeback victory over Freiburg in Bundesliga round 11, just days before their major Champions League clash against Arsenal.

At Allianz Arena on 22/11/2024, Freiburg shocked the hosts by taking a 2-0 lead within the first 17 minutes, with goals from Yuito Suzuki and Johan Manzambi. This marked the first time this season Bayern had to come from behind at home. However, they responded strongly, scoring six unanswered goals.

This result solidified Bayern's position at the top of the Bundesliga table with 31 points, extending their lead over second-placed Bayer Leverkusen to 8 points. Bayern has now held the top spot for 43 consecutive Bundesliga rounds, matching the league record they set between 1972 and 1973. With an 8-point advantage over their closest competitor, "The Bavarians" are set to surpass this record in at least two more rounds.

Head coach Vincent Kompany acknowledged this as a significant milestone but emphasized the team's focus beyond chasing records. "Breaking any record that has stood for such a long time is impressive", he stated. "However, we are not overly focused on records. The important thing is that the team has regained its confidence and sharpness".

Lennart Karl was a central figure in the match. Having already become the youngest player in Bayern's history to score in the Champions League earlier this season, the 17-year-old talent further etched his name into the Bundesliga record books. Karl reduced the deficit to 1-2 in the 22nd minute, assisted by Michael Olise, and then returned the favor by setting up the English midfielder for the 2-2 equalizer in first-half stoppage time.

With one goal and one assist, Karl became the youngest Bayern player to achieve this feat in a Bundesliga match. Across the entire league, the only player younger than Karl to have done so was Youssoufa Moukoko (Dortmund, 2022).

Kompany praised his player: "When you score six goals, many players contribute. But the goal that narrowed the gap was a turning point. Karl created a moment that not many players can. He gave us all the momentum".

Beyond Karl, Michael Olise also had a stellar evening, contributing to five goals with two goals and three assists. At 23 years and 345 days old, Olise became the youngest Bayern player to be involved in five goals in a single Bundesliga match since the 2004-2005 season.

Bayern has scored 41 goals in the first 11 Bundesliga rounds this season. Only one club has achieved a better record in the same period: Bayern themselves, with 42 goals in the first 11 rounds of the 2023-2024 season. Bayern currently has 31 points and a goal difference of +31, marking their best start through 11 Bundesliga rounds.

The 6-2 victory provides Bayern with a perfect boost ahead of their away match against Arsenal in Champions League round 5 on 26/11/2024. Kompany expressed confidence, stating, "We have put ourselves in a good position to continue improving. Facing Arsenal is a big challenge, but perhaps this is the moment we are most ready".
