Arteta's decision to start with a defensive midfield trio of Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, and Martin Zubimendi in the Premier League match against Manchester City raised eyebrows. He left attacking players Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Gabriel Martinelli on the bench, only bringing them on in the second half when Arsenal were trailing 1-0.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher stated that Arsenal currently possess one of the strongest squads in the Premier League, capable of winning both the Premier League and the Champions League. However, he believes Arteta's cautious approach in important matches is a recurring issue.
"The first 45 minutes were a complete waste," Carragher said. "I played for managers like Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez who were always afraid of making mistakes in big games, and Liverpool never won the Premier League. I see a similar pattern with Arteta – like in the away game against Liverpool in August and against Man City today. Every time they have a chance to finish off their opponents, Arsenal hesitate."
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville agreed, arguing that Arteta's decision to bench key attackers like Saka and Eze, only to introduce them when the team was behind, sent the wrong message to the players.
"At Arsenal, you have to attack from 0-0, not wait until you're losing," Neville emphasized. "When Arteta had to make two substitutions immediately after half-time, it showed he had chosen the wrong approach. This way, they make it difficult for themselves in big games."

Roy Keane was more critical, suggesting Arteta has a more defensive mindset than a winning one. "I've worked with great managers like Brian Clough and Alex Ferguson. They prioritized winning above all else, without fear of the opponent," the former Manchester United captain commented. "Arteta, on the other hand, seems to be always thinking about not losing. With the caliber of Liverpool and Man City, that mindset won't win Arsenal the title. They have to attack, they have to believe they can beat any opponent."
Keane also criticized Arteta's habit of expressing pride in his team after every game. "Pride is good, but it should come after you lift the trophy. Arsenal have finished second three years in a row. If they maintain this approach, they will finish second again," the 45-year-old warned.
Against Man City, Arsenal conceded a goal to Erling Haaland in the 9th minute and only managed to equalize through Martinelli in the third minute of second-half stoppage time. The 1-1 draw saw the Gunners return to second place, but Liverpool extended their lead to 5 points. Arsenal's next match is away to Newcastle on 28/9.
