Liverpool, the previous season's Premier League champions, are facing the risk of missing out on a Champions League spot after a 2-4 defeat to Aston Villa on 15/5 evening. Despite Virgil Van Dijk scoring a consolation goal in the 90+1 minute at Villa Park, Liverpool remain fifth with 59 points. If sixth-placed Bournemouth win their delayed match against Man City, they would close the gap to one point before the final round. The Premier League allocates five Champions League berths for its top five teams.

The loss to Aston Villa means Liverpool have not won an away game against any top 9 opponents this season. Their last unbeaten away match against such opposition was a 0-0 draw against Arsenal in January.
"Your away results reflect your character and resilience," Carragher stated. "I truly cannot believe Liverpool are still fifth in the standings. Look at their away record, the number of goals conceded, and how they never look dangerous in attack. Yet, they are still fifth. It's astonishing."
Last season, Liverpool won the title four rounds early, finishing 10 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal. However, after spending over 0.5 billion USD on transfers in summer 2025, extensive changes failed to strengthen the team, instead weakening all three lines. This season, Liverpool have conceded 52 goals in 37 matches, the highest in their history during 38-round Premier League seasons.
According to Carragher, Liverpool's defensive weaknesses were evident from their opening 4-2 victory against Bournemouth. Additionally, Slot's team has faced physical and mental issues.
"Liverpool are not excellent at anything. They appear to be a truly ordinary team. In this match, they were soundly beaten," Carragher added.
