Coach Kim Sang-sik offers few words after narrow victory over Singapore

Coach Kim Sang-sik didn't have much to say after Vietnam squandered several opportunities and only managed a 1-0 win against Singapore in the second round of the 2026 U23 Asian Cup qualifiers.

"There weren't many goals in today's match, and there's not much to say," the South Korean coach shared after the match at Viet Tri Stadium on the evening of 6/9/2025, adding that he was happy to see a larger crowd than their opening 2-0 victory against Bangladesh.

Vietnam entered the match needing a win, as Yemen had defeated Bangladesh earlier that day to top Group C with six points. Coach Kim fielded a strong lineup including goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien, midfielders Nguyen Thai Son, Nguyen Van Truong, Khuat Van Khang, and Le Viktor, and forwards Nguyen Dinh Bac and Nguyen Cong Phuong.

Against a relatively inexperienced Singapore side featuring many U20 players, Vietnam dominated the first half, creating numerous chances but failing to convert. Notably, Viktor hit the post. In the second half, the ball struck the Singapore crossbar after a shot by forward Nguyen Thanh Nhan.

In addition to the lack of finishing from the Vietnamese attackers, Singaporean goalkeeper Aizil Yazid also had an outstanding performance with around 10 saves.

With about 10 minutes remaining in the second half, as the Singaporean players began to tire, Vietnam finally found the breakthrough. From a quick counter-attack, midfielder Nguyen Phi Hoang delivered a perfect cross for Nguyen Van Thuan, who headed the ball into the near corner, leaving goalkeeper Yazid stunned. Both players involved in the goal had been substituted in by Coach Kim at the start of the second half.

"As you could see, we created many opportunities, but their goalkeeper played exceptionally well. We need to improve our finishing," Coach Kim commented.

With this result, Vietnam reclaimed the top spot in Group C. In the final match on 9/9, the hosts need only a draw against Yemen to secure direct qualification for the U23 Asian Cup finals. However, Coach Kim affirmed that Vietnam would analyze and prepare thoroughly, aiming for all three points against Yemen.

"With the quality of our current squad, I am confident we can win," the South Korean coach stated, emphasizing that while Yemen's defense is strong, Vietnam possesses fast players who can exploit the space behind their backline.

The 2026 U23 Asian Cup qualifiers, taking place from 3/9 to 9/9, feature 44 teams divided into 11 groups. The 11 group winners, the four best second-placed teams, and hosts Saudi Arabia will qualify for the finals. Vietnam is in Group C with Bangladesh, Singapore, and Yemen.
