Coach Mai Duc Chung: 'Promised gold, so there's only one path'

Coach Mai Duc Chung praised Vietnam players for narrowly securing the top spot in group B and advancing to the SEA Games 33 semifinals on the afternoon of 11/12.

Entering the final matchday, Vietnam sat in second place, three points adrift of Myanmar. The team faced a must-win situation to progress, especially with the Philippines anticipated to secure a dominant victory over Malaysia in their concurrent fixture.

As predicted, the Philippines defeated Malaysia 6-0. Simultaneously, at Chonburi stadium, Vietnam delivered an impressive performance, scoring two goals within the first 15 minutes through Ngan Thi Van Su and Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy to secure a victory over Myanmar.

"Before SEA Games 33, during our send-off ceremony, we promised to bring home the gold medal," Coach Mai Duc Chung shared at the post-match press conference in Chonburi. "Today, our only path was victory, and the players rose to the significant challenge."

Myanmar enjoyed substantial home support with a large crowd in attendance. However, Mr. Chung stated this atmosphere did not pressure his team; instead, it motivated the Vietnamese players to perform better.

Vietnam defeated Myanmar 2-0 in the final group B match of women's football SEA Games 33.

The coach also credited tactical adjustments for the team's success. "We pushed Van Su higher with the objective of attacking and scoring," he explained. "Later, Huynh Nhu entered to solidify the midfield. All tactical changes implemented today proved correct. The central defensive partnership of Le Thi Diem My and Hoang Thi Loan, while appearing new, has a history of playing together and executed our strategy effectively."

Ngan Thi Van Su, despite her height of only 1,52 m, scored the opening goal with a powerful header, outmaneuvering her opponent. Bich Thuy then seized an opportunity to head in a second goal. Coach Mai Duc Chung commended both players, particularly Van Su, for her quick reactions and excellent positioning.

Securing the group B top spot means Vietnam advances to the semifinals against Indonesia, considered the weakest team among the remaining four contenders. Host Thailand will compete against the Philippines in the other semifinal.

Both semifinal matches are scheduled for the afternoon of 14/12 in Chonburi.
