This marked one of the luckiest victories in Djokovic's career, spanning over 20 years, as he was outplayed by his younger opponent throughout the match but benefited from Musetti's right leg injury.
Early in the third set, the Italian player began making unforced errors, showing visible distress and tearing up as he returned to his bench. After receiving medical attention, Musetti attempted to continue for a few more minutes before ultimately approaching Djokovic to shake hands, signaling his retirement.

"I don't know what to say", Djokovic stated in an on-court interview at Rod Laver Arena after the match. "These things happen in sports, and it has happened to me a few times before. However, to be in a grand slam quarterfinal, leading by two sets, and completely dominating the match only to have something like this occur is truly unfortunate. I sincerely wish him a swift recovery; he should have been the winner today".
