Commentator faces backlash for 'wishing' injury on Djokovic

Australian Open 2026 commentator Wally Masur drew criticism after suggesting Novak Djokovic was so dominant that only a muscle tear could lead to a loss against Pedro Martinez.

"I think Pedro Martinez's best chance is if Djokovic tears his adductor muscle in a slide. That's probably what Martinez needs," Masur remarked shockingly in the third set, as Djokovic completely outplayed his opponent and was nearing victory on 19/1.

While Masur's comment appeared to be a compliment to Djokovic's strength, many fans were upset, believing the commentator was hoping the 24-time Grand Slam champion would get injured. "This Grand Slam needs a new commentator, Craig Tiley fire Masur," a Djokovic fan commented on the Australian Open's X social media page.

Craig Tiley, CEO of the Australian Open, has not commented on the incident. However, Masur himself interviewed Nole after the match. During the interview, the veteran commentator again caused confusion by saying he was "excited" by the Serbian player's physique, while a large screen showed Djokovic celebrating his 2012 championship title by taking off his shirt.

"Novak, you must have taken great care of your physique," Masur said. "This is impressive, what's your body fat percentage, probably 1%?" The 38-year-old player responded that he wished for such a body composition, but things had changed after 15 years.

Before Djokovic's match, Masur also caused confusion during an interview with Andrey Rublev. The host commentator expressed a desire for more interviews with the Russian player, stating, "we haven't really connected yet, but we will." Rublev then countered, asserting there was no relationship between them, prompting laughter from the crowd.

Djokovic had a smooth start to the Grand Slam in Melbourne, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 against Spanish opponent Pedro Martinez. This victory marked his 100th win at the tournament. Prior to the event, Nole had caused concern by withdrawing from an event in Adelaide and missing his first two practice sessions at the Australian Open.

Djokovic's opponent in the second round is Italian qualifier Francesco Maestrelli. In his tournament debut, the 23-year-old talent overcame Terence Atmane 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-1, 6-1 to secure his first main draw victory at a Grand Slam.
