A football match in Brazil has sparked debate after a player received a yellow card for briefly stepping on the ball. The incident involved Dodo, a Nautico player, who, when facing two opponents from Santa Cruz, placed both feet on the ball for about one second. He then continued his play, passing to a teammate. However, the referee stopped the game and issued a yellow card to Dodo, deeming his action disrespectful to the opposition. This decision reportedly aligned with the rules of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

The referee's handling of the situation ignited controversy after the match. Many viewers and commentators argued that Dodo's move was spontaneous and did not show disrespect or affect his opponents. Conversely, some believed Dodo should not have performed such a move, especially since it offered no tactical advantage in overcoming or disadvantaging the opposing players.
Neymar, Brazil's all-time leading scorer, weighed in on the debate, siding with Dodo. The forward openly criticized the referee on social media, declaring, "They are destroying football."
Dodo and Neymar share a similar background, having both emerged from the Santos youth academy. Dodo currently plays for Nautico in the Pernambucano state championship and the Brazilian second division. In the recent match, Dodo contributed one goal to Nautico's 4-0 victory over Santa Cruz. However, he received a second yellow card after halftime for a foul on Ianson.
Neymar's strong defense of Dodo resonates with his own playing style. Throughout his career, the former Barca and PSG star was known for his spontaneous, skillful dribbling and spectacular goals. Yet, this flair often led to accusations of excessive showmanship, perceived disrespect towards opponents, and, consequently, more fouls committed against him.
Last season, Neymar scored 11 goals in 28 matches for Santos. His strong performance in the latter half of the season helped Santos narrowly avoid relegation in the Brazilian championship, finishing four points above the relegation zone. Despite his club form, Neymar has yet to convince coach Carlo Ancelotti for a return to the Brazil national team. He has until May to secure a spot for the 2026 World Cup. Neymar holds the record for most goals scored for Brazil, with 79 goals, two more than Pele's previous record.
