Dubbed a "reverse sport" by sociologist Yann Ramirez in his 2021 thesis due to its top-down structure with tight organizational control, mixed martial arts (MMA) has its origins in the UFC 1 event held in Denver, Colorado on 12/11/1993.
Through these early tournaments, the UFC realized that the chaotic clash of styles was unsustainable. The term "MMA" officially emerged in January 1999. By 2001, unified rules were established, ending the "no holds barred" era and introducing weight classes, referees, and timed rounds.
MMA gradually evolved into a regulated sport with controlled violence and clear rules. The UFC, meanwhile, became a resounding success, currently valued at over 8 billion USD.
