Diogo Jota: A life of talent cut short

The 28-year-old forward, who scored 133 club goals and 14 for Portugal, died on 3/7 in a car accident.

Jota began his career at Pacos Ferreira, a mid-table Portuguese Primeira Liga club, at the age of 18. With 15 goals in 45 matches, the young player attracted attention from larger clubs.

In the summer of 2016, Atletico Madrid, through Gestifute - the agency of super-agent Jorge Mendes - signed Jota to a five-year contract. He played only three matches for the Madrid club, all summer friendlies, before being loaned back to Portugal to play for Porto for a season. At Dragao Stadium, Jota continued to prove his talent with 9 goals in 37 matches, including a goal against Leicester in the Champions League.

Jota's career took a new turn when he joined English Championship side Wolves in 2017. After the Portuguese star scored 18 goals in the 2017-2018 season, helping the team gain promotion to the Premier League, Wolves immediately paid USD 15 million to secure him from Atletico.

Jota continued to impress in England's top flight. In January 2019, he scored a hat-trick in Wolves' 4-3 win over Leicester, becoming the second Portuguese player, after Cristiano Ronaldo, to achieve this feat in the Premier League.

Impressed by Jota's 44 goals in 131 matches for Wolves, Liverpool paid USD 50 million for him in 2020. At Anfield, the 23-year-old continued to showcase his ball control and sharp finishing. He scored 65 goals in 182 matches, won 4 titles, and reached 5 finals with the team.

The 2021-2022 season was Jota's peak. He scored 21 goals in 55 games, including one in a 5-0 Premier League victory against Man Utd and a brace in a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the League Cup semi-final. In the League Cup and FA Cup finals, Jota successfully converted his penalties, helping Liverpool beat Chelsea 11-10 and 6-5, respectively.

In the 2024-2025 season, injuries hampered Jota, but he still managed to score 9 goals. One of those goals helped Liverpool defeat rivals Everton and maintain a 12-point lead over Arsenal. In May 2025, Jota lifted his first Premier League trophy.

Jota, his girlfriend Rute Cardoso, and their three children celebrate the Premier League title at Anfield.

On 8/6, Jota helped Portugal defeat Spain 5-3 on penalties in the Nations League final. He won his second international title, after the 2019 Nations League. Jota scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for the national team since his first call-up in March 2019.

On 22/6, Jota married Cardoso after 13 years together. Cardoso posted a wedding photo on social media with the caption: "Yes, forever together. A dream come true", while Jota commented: "I'm a lucky man".

But 11 days after the wedding, tragedy struck. The 28-year-old forward and his younger brother Andre died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain. The car reportedly blew a tire while speeding past another vehicle, veered off the road, and caught fire.
