On 21/8, the website for the Diogo Jota Foundation, diogojotafoundation.org, was blank. Both Liverpool Football Club and the late player's family denied any connection to the organization.
The foundation appeared just three days after the Portuguese forward's death. It claimed to have raised 64,573 USD, accepting only cryptocurrency payments. Supporters were directed to a platform where they could pay with "USDT, ETH and other cryptocurrencies securely via NOWPayments". However, NOWPayments CEO, Kate Lifshits, confirmed that they had not processed any related transactions.

The foundation stated its goal was to honor Jota's legacy by supporting youth, improving communities, and promoting football. It also claimed to have provided 25,000 meals, sponsored 300 students, and established 50 local partnerships.
According to the Charity Commission for England and Wales, the Diogo Jota Foundation never applied for registration, a requirement for charities based in England or Wales with annual incomes exceeding 6,800 USD.
Jota and his younger brother, Andre, died in Spain on 3/7 while driving from Portugal to catch a ferry to England. Their car reportedly suffered a tire blowout, veered off the road, and caught fire. Jota had recently undergone lung surgery and, on medical advice, was avoiding air travel to minimize strain on his lungs.

Jota's death came just 11 days after his wedding to Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children. Despite having no obligation to do so, Liverpool paid the remaining two years of Jota's salary to his family.
The Premier League champions also retired Jota's number 20 jersey. His name and number will appear on the squad list every season. Liverpool also established a community football program in Jota's name through the LFC Foundation.
Jota played for Liverpool from the 2020-2021 season, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances and winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup. He also scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for the Portuguese national team, winning two Nations League titles.
