The incident occurred at a luxury bar within the high-end Porto Marina resort in El Alamein, Egypt, where Hossam was vacationing. An argument between his long-time wife Howaida El Gharbawy and his second wife Dina Mustafa, also known as Dan Adam, quickly escalated into a physical altercation with hair-pulling. Many tourists witnessed the brawl. Relatives from both sides intervened immediately before security forces arrived.
Both women reportedly sustained injuries, including some scratches and bruises. According to Egyptian newspaper Al Arabiya, Hassan felt dizzy and collapsed while attempting to break up the fight.
Following the incident, Hassan reportedly decided to divorce his first wife, Howaida. He officially signed the divorce papers at a notary public office in Cairo.

Hassan and Howaida were together for decades and had three children before their unexpected separation. Lawyer Mohamed Shams, legal representative for his second wife Dan Adam, told Sky News Arabia: "We hoped the incident would not lead to divorce, but things have escalated to this point." Shams also stated that his client was the victim of a "deliberate attack" during her vacation at Porto Marina. In contrast, Ahmed Hamad, lawyer for Howaida's family, declined to comment on the details of the separation, stating the family does not wish to engage with the media at this time.
Hassan married Dan Adam in 2015 while still married to Howaida. The two briefly separated in 2022 before reconciling. Under Egyptian law, a Muslim man is permitted to have a maximum of four wives simultaneously. The civil registry is responsible for officially notifying the current wife or wives about a new marriage. A husband with multiple wives also has an obligation to treat all wives fairly regarding accommodation, financial support, and living standards.

Hassan is an Egyptian football legend, holding the national team's goal-scoring record with 69 goals in 177 matches. He participated in the 1990 World Cup and seven Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments with the Egyptian national team. After retiring as a player, Hassan transitioned into coaching, leading several clubs in Egypt. He took charge of the Egypt national team in 2024, guiding them to the round of 16 World Cup 2026, where they lost 2-3 to Argentina. Following the tournament, the 59-year-old coach extended his contract, remaining in his position until 2030.
