Keegan’s family confirmed the news in an announcement issued on 20/7. According to the announcement, he passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and daughters after several months of treatment.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at 75", the statement read. "He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. The family thanks the medical team for their dedicated care of Kevin throughout this time and requests privacy".

Keegan's family had previously revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer in January. By June, the disease had progressed to stage four.

Regarded as one of English football's greatest icons, Keegan left a deep mark as both a player and manager. Born in 1951, he began his career at Liverpool, where he won three national championships, one European Cup (the predecessor to the Champions League), one FA Cup, and two UEFA Cups before moving to Hamburg in 1977.

In Germany, Keegan reached the pinnacle of his playing career, becoming the first English player to win two consecutive Ballon d'Or awards in 1978 and 1979. In 1982, the British Royal Family awarded him the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his contributions to football.

Representing England, Keegan played 63 matches, scored 21 goals, and captained the national team for many years. After retiring as a player, he managed the "Three Lions" from 1999-2000.

At the club level, Keegan achieved his greatest managerial success at Newcastle. He led the team back to England's top flight and transformed St. James' Park into a Premier League title contender during the 1995-1996 season. Although Manchester United ultimately surpassed them in the title race, Keegan's team is still remembered as one of the most exciting in the league's history. In addition to Newcastle, Keegan also managed Fulham and Manchester City before retiring.

Upon hearing the news, Newcastle expressed their condolences: "Today, we mourn the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential, and beloved figures in the club's history. At an appropriate time, we will pay him a tribute worthy of his contributions."
