Playing in front of over 16,000 spectators, a record attendance at Vale Park this century, Port Vale started the match with intensity, trying to create an electrifying atmosphere.
However, Arsenal started strong and took the lead after just 8 minutes. Gabriel Martinelli combined with Myles Lewis-Skelly before setting up Eze, whose right-footed curler found the back of the net past goalkeeper Joe Gauci. This marked the first goal for the English midfielder since his 90 million USD transfer to Arsenal during the 2025 summer window.

Manager Mikel Arteta made 9 changes to the starting lineup from the 1-1 draw against Man City in the fifth round of the Premier League last weekend, retaining only midfielder Mikel Merino and center-back William Saliba. Despite dominating possession, reaching 81%, the Gunners lacked sharpness in the final third.
Port Vale capitalized on this, creating several chances that tested goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, most notably a dangerous long-range shot from Devante Cole, son of former star Andy Cole. Even Bukayo Saka underperformed and was substituted in the 63rd minute, making way for 15-year-old talent Max Dowman.

Arsenal finally found relief in the 82nd minute. William Saliba's long pass found Leandro Trossard, who took a few touches before slotting the ball into the near post, securing a 2-0 victory. This was the Belgian forward's second goal in five appearances across all competitions this season, following his decisive goal in the 2-0 win against Bilbao in the first leg of the 2025-2026 Champions League.
Following the match, the fourth-round draw for the League Cup took place. Arsenal will host Brighton at the Emirates Stadium at the end of October.
