Former agent of Gareth Bale accused of enslaving woman

Jonathan Barnett, the former agent of Gareth Bale, faces accusations of threatening, torturing, and raping an American woman over a six-year period.

In June, Jane Doe, a California woman, filed a lawsuit against Barnett. Doe alleges she was lured from Australia to England in 2017 and subsequently forced into sexual servitude until 2023.

According to the 4/9 edition of the Daily Mail, Barnett persuaded Doe to work for Stellar Group, the talent management company he founded. After paying for Doe and her two children to relocate to England, Barnett allegedly raped her at least 39 times. The lawsuit also claims Barnett engaged in other abusive behaviors, such as referring to himself as "master" and Doe as "slave," physically assaulting her, and threatening to kill her and her children if she spoke out.

Doe also accuses Barnett of encouraging her to lure other victims, comparing the process to recruiting football players.

In 12/2021, Doe drove to Barnett's house. Upon seeing Barnett outside with his driver, she called the driver over and said, "I don't know about you, but he treats me like a slave." She then handed the driver a bag of sex toys, saying, "These are for Barnett."

Seeing Doe, Barnett approached her car, leaned into the passenger window, and said, "I will smash your face and break your legs if you mention this again. Don't expect to go home in one piece."

Barnett reportedly agreed to a settlement of approximately 40,000 USD but never paid. In 4/2023, Doe was hospitalized due to injuries sustained from the alleged torture.

CAA, the agency where Barnett was a member, is also named as a co-defendant for allegedly aiding and abetting. Both CAA and the 75-year-old agent deny any wrongdoing. In July, Barnett stated, "The allegations are baseless and untrue. I will defend myself through the legal process and seek to clear my name."

Barnett founded Stellar Group in 1992. He represented numerous top football players, including Gareth Bale, Jack Grealish, Saul Niguez, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Jordan Pickford. In 2013, he brokered Bale's 115 million USD transfer from Tottenham to Real Madrid. He also represented boxing star Lennox Lewis.

Stellar Group was acquired by ICM Partners in 2020 and subsequently by CAA two years later. Barnett retired as an agent at CAA in 2024.

Barnett is Jewish and a member of St John's Wood Synagogue. He is married with three children.
