Friends and family bid farewell to Diogo Jota

Close friend Ruben Neves flew back from the US to say goodbye to Diogo Jota, after playing in the Al Hilal - Fluminense match at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinals.

At 10:00 AM on 5/7 Lisbon time (4:00 PM, Hanoi time), the families of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva held a funeral for the two brothers, who died in a car accident in Spain two days earlier. Former Portugal national team coach, Fernando Santos (white shirt, center) was in attendance.

Current Portugal national team coach, Roberto Martinez (center) was also present. On 6/8, he and Jota won the Nations League after a 5-3 penalty shootout victory against Spain.

Man City center-back Ruben Dias (second from left) came to pay his respects to his Portugal teammate.

Nelson Semedo (left), Jota's former teammate at Wolves and the Portugal national team, was also present.

Also present at the ceremony were Thiago Alcantara (white shirt) and Fabinho (center), two of Jota's former teammates at Liverpool.

Liverpool members brought two wreaths with the numbers 20 and 30, Jota's and Andre Silva's jersey numbers at Liverpool and Penafiel respectively. They were also present at the visitation the day before.

Bernardo Silva, Jota's Portugal teammate, came to bid him farewell on the second day.

Two former defenders of the Portugal national team, Abel Xavier (second from left) and Ricardo Carvalho (fourth from left) were among the attendees.

At 11:00 AM local time, the two coffins were taken from the Gondomar chapel to the adjacent church for the funeral service.

Ruben Neves (black t-shirt) flew from the US to Portugal to bid farewell to Jota. Neves had just played in the Club World Cup quarterfinal, where Al Hilal lost 1-2 to Fluminense, 12 hours earlier. The two players had been close friends since playing together for Wolves and the Portugal national team.

Jota's wife and sister comforted each other beside the coffin.

Forward Federico Chiesa could not hold back his tears as he followed the coffin of his teammate.

Players from Penafiel, the Portuguese second division team, carried the coffin of their teammate Andre Silva.

Thousands of fans prayed from outside, as the church was not large enough to accommodate everyone.

After the funeral service in the church, the two coffins were taken to the adjacent cemetery for burial.

On 2/7, Jota had dinner with his wife and three children in Portugal. That evening, he and his brother Andre Silva drove from Porto, planning to reach Santander, Spain, to catch a ferry to England. Jota had recently been treated for a collapsed lung and doctors advised him against flying to avoid pressure on his lungs.

The accident occurred shortly after they crossed the Portugal-Spain border at 12:30 AM on 3/7. According to police, the car blew a tire while overtaking another vehicle, veered off the road, and caught fire.

Jota, 28, scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and two League Cups. He also scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for Portugal, winning the Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

Andre Silva, two years younger, had played for the Portuguese second division team Penafiel since 2023.
