On 2/7, Jota had dinner with his wife and three children in Portugal. That evening, he and his brother Andre Silva drove from Porto, planning to reach Santander, Spain, to catch a ferry to England. Jota had recently been treated for a collapsed lung and doctors advised him against flying to avoid pressure on his lungs.
The accident occurred shortly after they crossed the Portugal-Spain border at 12:30 AM on 3/7. According to police, the car blew a tire while overtaking another vehicle, veered off the road, and caught fire.
Jota, 28, scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup, and two League Cups. He also scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for Portugal, winning the Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Andre Silva, two years younger, had played for the Portuguese second division team Penafiel since 2023.
