As Joe Wright, 29, prepared to take a goal kick, he unexpectedly turned his back to the field, facing a group of home fans standing close to the barrier. After a few seconds, he abruptly changed direction and swung his right arm, punching a spectator.
Immediately after, Wright returned to the field calmly, ready to continue playing. However, the match was interrupted for about 7 minutes by whistles and jeers from more than 2,000 spectators at Chelmsford's stadium. The refereeing team did not witness the incident, so the goalkeeper was not sent off. A video of the incident was later posted on social media platform X, attracting hundreds of thousands of views.
Essex Police later confirmed they received no request for intervention at the stadium and did not deploy officers for the incident. Despite this, organizers increased security behind the goal, with several staff members in reflective vests monitoring the area until the end of the match.
After the match, Wright was not disciplined directly on the field but was escorted off by security personnel. This measure aimed to prevent potential clashes between the player and spectators.
The two clubs also had conflicting reactions on social media before deleting related posts. Enfield Town stated their goalkeeper had a verbal exchange with an opposing fan and alleged that an object was thrown at Wright before the incident. In contrast, Chelmsford City asserted they had video evidence showing Wright punched a spectator.
On the field, Chelmsford City won 3-0 against Enfield Town. However, the controversy surrounding the visiting goalkeeper's behavior overshadowed the sporting result.
The Football Association (FA) has launched an investigation. The body will review the referee's report and relevant evidence to reach an official conclusion. In English football, assaulting a spectator is considered a serious offense and can lead to severe penalties, including long-term suspensions or additional disciplinary measures. Nevertheless, the full context of this case still needs clarification, especially the events that transpired before Wright turned to face the stands.
Former Man Utd striker Eric Cantona famously jump-kicked a Crystal Palace fan during a match between the two teams in 1995. As a result, Cantona was banned from playing for 8 months.
