Messi scores in new stadium debut

Lionel Messi scored one goal, helping Inter Miami secure a 2-2 draw against Austin in their NU stadium debut.

Inter Miami played their inaugural match at NU stadium on 4/4 against Austin. The NU stadium has a capacity of 26,700 spectators, approximately 5,000 more than Chase stadium, which the reigning MLS champions used for the previous two seasons.

Messi equalized for Inter Miami, making it 1-1 in the 10th minute. The Argentine captain initiated the attack himself, then surged into the penalty area to receive the ball and head it into the top corner.

Just four minutes prior, Austin had taken the lead. Guilherme Biro connected with a corner kick, heading it past goalkeeper St Clair.

Austin demonstrated efficiency, maintaining 39% possession and recording three shots on target. In contrast, Inter Miami held 1.5 times more possession but managed only 4 shots on target. In the 53rd minute, the visitors once again took the lead against the reigning MLS champions. Jayden Nelson found the net past St Clair following a counter-attack initiated by Messi's turnover.

Inter Miami secured their equalizer in the 82nd minute. Luis Suarez capitalized on a rebound from a corner kick, striking a left-footed shot to level the score at 2-2.

The draw against Austin dropped Inter Miami to 4th place in the MLS Eastern Conference 2026 standings. Messi and his teammates have accumulated 11 points from 6 matches, matching the points of New York City and Charlotte but with an inferior goal difference. Nashville currently leads the conference with 13 points.
