Guardiola: 'New signings will determine Man City's season'

Following the 2-0 victory over Wolves, coach Pep Guardiola stated that January's two new signings, Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo, will play a pivotal role for Man City in the latter half of this season.

Manchester City's recent 2-0 victory over Wolves saw new January signings Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo make a significant impact, prompting coach Pep Guardiola to declare them pivotal for the remainder of the season. The match, played at the Etihad Stadium on 24/1, showcased the immediate contributions of both players.

Guehi, a 27 million USD signing from Crystal Palace, delivered a convincing debut despite only two training sessions with his new teammates. The 25-year-old English center-back displayed maturity, impressive situational awareness, and ball control in defense, significantly contributing to Man City's clean sheet.

Meanwhile, in attack, Semenyo continued his impressive form. He scored the goal sealing the 2-0 victory and hit the crossbar once in the second half. The Ghanaian winger has now scored three goals in four matches since joining Man City for 88 million USD from Bournemouth.

Guardiola believes the duo's performances not only secured a vital win but also indicated their crucial role in Man City's pursuit of titles across four fronts this season. "Certainly, they are ready players", Guardiola said after the match, highlighting their immediate readiness.

He praised Semenyo's impact: "Semenyo has made a significant impact since his time at Bournemouth, bringing abundant energy, and for a forward, numbers are always crucial. He scored a superb goal; it looked simple, but the control and finish were perfect".

The Spanish manager also lauded Guehi's rare focus and composure. "Guehi understands everything. He reminds me of Ruben Dias when he first arrived, always focused in every action. His ball handling is very calm, he reads situations well, and communicates effectively", Guardiola stated.

Man City expedited negotiations to sign Guehi amidst long-term injuries to three top center-backs: John Stones, Ruben Dias, and Josko Gvardiol. However, Guardiola emphasized that Guehi is not a short-term signing. "He is not here for six months, but for many years. The perfect age, the right price, and a player you can trust", he expressed.

Notably, the win against Wolves marked the first match this season that Erling Haaland did not start in the 2025-2026 Premier League season. Guardiola explained that the Norwegian striker needed to be "refreshed" physically and mentally after a demanding schedule.

Meanwhile, Guehi expressed satisfaction with his debut and praised the Etihad atmosphere. The English center-back had 112 touches, achieved a 93% passing accuracy rate, and made several important interceptions and committed tackles, contributing to Man City's first victory in 2026.

"I am very grateful for this opportunity and happy to be here, but I don't want to say too much", the English center-back shared. "As soon as you step into the team, you can feel the intensity and the entire squad's desire to win". He added that defensive acts are not individual but reflect the team's collective spirit. "It's important to do everything, from defending to scoring, to win", the 25-year-old player stated.

Man City will continue their home fixtures on 28/1, facing Galatasaray in the final match of the Champions League group stage.
