Haaland changes name on national team jersey

Striker Erling Haaland will play for the Norway national team in September with a new name on his jersey: Braut Haaland.

The Football Association of Norway confirmed the 25-year-old striker has decided to add his mother's surname (Braut) to his jersey, in line with Norwegian naming traditions. Previously, he only used his father's surname (Haaland) while playing for clubs like Salzburg, Dortmund, Man City, and the national team.

In Norway, using both parents' surnames is common. Haaland's father is Alf-Inge Haaland, a former Man City player from 2000-2003. His mother, Gry Marita Braut, was a heptathlon champion in the 1990s.

The full name Erling Braut Haaland is not unfamiliar to fans. When he scored 9 goals at the 2019 U20 World Cup, he was introduced with this full name. On social media, Haaland has long used both surnames. Norway's head coach, Stale Solbakken, admitted he had just learned about the jersey change and considered it natural. "That's his name, it's not complicated," Solbakken said.

Haaland will debut the new jersey in a friendly match against Finland on 4/9, before joining Norway against Moldova in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on 9/9.

Norway currently leads Group I with 12 points after 4 matches, giving them a strong chance to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Haaland is also among the top scorers in the qualifiers with 4 goals, tied with Patrik Schick (Czech Republic) and Andrej Kramaric (Croatia).

Off the field, Haaland continues to attract attention with his lavish lifestyle. After signing a record-breaking contract in the Premier League, worth almost 1.35 million USD per week over 9 years, he has continuously added supercars to his collection. From a Ford Shelby F-150, Porsche 911 GT3, Ferrari 812 Superfast, to a Bugatti Tourbillon worth £4 million, Haaland's car collection has been described as "enough to open a museum".

At Man City, the name "Haaland" will still appear on his familiar number 9 jersey, as there's no information about him changing it at the club.
