The heptathlon, a grueling two-day competition consisting of 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin throw, and 800m, is one of the most demanding track and field events for women. Athletes competing in combined events like this are often well-rounded, possess unwavering determination, and demonstrate remarkable endurance. They are often playfully referred to as "iron people" within the athletics community.

Before the 2025 National Championships in Da Nang, the Vietnamese national heptathlon record was 5440 points, set by Nguyen Linh Na in 2022 when she won gold at the SEA Games on home soil. However, Na did not compete this year due to family commitments.
In Na's absence, 24-year-old Hoang Thanh Giang from Hai Phong emerged as a strong contender. Giang delivered a stellar performance across all seven disciplines, achieving a total score of 5481 points. This not only secured her the gold medal but also established a new national record.
"I am incredibly happy and thrilled. Words can't express how I feel. I can only say it feels amazing to break the record," Giang told VnExpress after the competition in Da Nang.

Giang, who comes from a family without a sporting background, initially focused on long jump, even defeating ASIAD champion Bui Thi Thao with a jump of 6.39 meters to win the national title. She later transitioned to heptathlon, winning the 2024 national championship with 5338 points. Following that victory, Giang battled persistent injuries in her adductor and heel. However, the Hai Phong native viewed these setbacks as motivation, fueling her determination to achieve the national record in Da Nang.
"Going through those difficult times due to injury made me even more determined, not giving up," Giang shared. "I want to thank my family, coach Manh Hieu, my teachers, and friends who have always supported and encouraged me to achieve this unexpected result. This gold medal helps me fulfill my goal before the competition and will give me more confidence to continue on my journey."

Giang has competed in two consecutive SEA Games in the heptathlon, finishing fourth both times, while Linh Na secured gold at the 32nd SEA Games with 5403 points.
Building on her new national record, Giang has set her sights on winning a medal at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand later this year. "I strive every day, in every step, every breath. I hope to achieve a breakthrough for Vietnamese athletics and fulfill my dream of winning a medal at the upcoming SEA Games," she stated.
