Host nation Indonesia lost to Australia 0-1 in the AFF U19 Championship semi-final on the evening of 11/6, with VAR intervening in the 90th minute.

The semi-final match between defending champions Indonesia and title contenders Australia, held at Sumatera Utara Main stadium, was largely uneventful, with few dangerous opportunities created. As both teams seemed destined for a 0-0 draw and a penalty shootout, tragedy struck the host nation.

In the 89th minute, a misplaced pass from an Indonesian defender allowed an Australian player to intercept and deliver a through ball to striker Marcus Neill, who broke free and skillfully slotted the ball into Indonesia's net. The assistant referee immediately raised the flag for offside. However, VAR intervened and awarded the goal to the visiting team.

At the AFF U19 Championship 2026, VAR was not implemented during the group stage. This video assistant referee technology was only used for the semi-final and final matches.

After VAR confirmed the goal, the Australian players rushed towards the home crowd, provocatively removing their shirts in celebration. They had been frustrated throughout the match by numerous fouls from Indonesia and constant jeering from the stands. This provocative display earned Australia a yellow card for Marcus Neill, along with a shower of thrown water bottles. Despite this, they held firm during the six minutes of added time to secure their 1-0 lead, earning a spot in the final.

When the final whistle blew, the home players collapsed onto the field amidst heavy rain. As the defending champions, Indonesia had prepared thoroughly for this tournament with their strongest squad. They also resorted to various tactics, including aggressive play, diving, and long throw-ins, to achieve their goals. In their final group stage match, Indonesia defeated Vietnam with a late penalty to secure their semi-final berth.

In the other semi-final, Thailand easily defeated Cambodia 4-0.

The final match between Thailand and Australia will take place at 20h on 13/6.
