Bayern extended their record-breaking streak to 22 consecutive Champions League opening wins. The last time the German giants failed to win their opening match was in 9/2002, when they lost 3-2 to Deportivo La Coruna.
Bayern also stretched their unbeaten home record in Champions League group stage matches to 35 games (33 wins, two draws), a run that began after a 3-2 loss to Man City in 12/2013.

The clash at Allianz Arena evoked memories of the 2012 Champions League final, where Chelsea claimed their first title after a dramatic penalty shootout. However, on 17/9, Bayern ensured there would be no repeat upset.
Bayern dominated possession with 56% and had 16 shots, five on target, compared to Chelsea's nine shots with three on target. Harry Kane continued to be Bayern's main attacking threat. In the 25th minute, the English striker was brought down in the box by Moises Caicedo, earning a penalty. Kane converted the spot-kick, sending Robert Sanchez the wrong way with a shot to the right corner.

The goal was Kane's 94th in 102 appearances for Bayern and his ninth against Chelsea. Bayern have now successfully converted their last 12 penalties in the Champions League, a streak that began after Robert Lewandowski's miss against Benfica on 2/11/2021.
In the 63rd minute, Kane capitalized on a defensive error to seal the victory. Malo Gusto miscontrolled a pass, inadvertently playing the ball straight to Kane in the penalty area. The 32-year-old made no mistake, slotting the ball past Tosin Adarabioyo to complete his brace.
Earlier, Chelsea had opened the scoring, also thanks to a defensive mishap. Michael Olise's cross from the right deflected off Trevoh Chalobah and into the net, going down as an own goal.

For Chelsea, Cole Palmer was a bright spark, but his efforts alone couldn't salvage a point. In the 29th minute, Palmer combined well with Gusto before curling a left-footed shot into the far corner, leaving Manuel Neuer with no chance.
In the 89th minute, another Gusto assist set up Palmer for a fine finish past Neuer, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
